Is the merger of Sun and IBM going to destroy Microsoft?

BREAKING NEWS: The deal is not going through, the pseudo-dino Scott McNealy A.K.A. Megalodon SUN's co-founder and his friends are too greedy and rejected the $9.40/share deal offered by IBM. They should really listen to the CEO Jonathan Schwartz, that has more then once shown leadership and foresight  (We have praised him many time on this site for making MySQL and Solaris Servers OS, open source). We personally hope that a common ground between SUN/IBM can still be found, let us cross our fingers and see if it helps. By the way this is very good news for the LINUX community, and they are taking advantage of this situation to strengthen their position in the server market!

Rumors: Sun is preparing a Desktop Solaris geared toward home users and gamers!

Solaris is already running Linux applications on the Solaris Operating Environment, Intel platform edition, without a glitch using  lxrun (click on the link to read more). Solaris is also capable to run some Microsoft Window program such as Microsoft Office, Google Earth, Google Picasa, Steam and Steam based Games natively using the Bordeaux (Wine derivative for Solaris)

So what is going to be new!

  • Next Solaris (or maybe another name) will be able to run all Linux Open Source Applications naively.
  • Intelligent Software download and install on demand will be integrated in basic menu (you will be able to for example to right click an .avi file and find a menu option stating -> install Creative Cow/ install Kino etc. Moving your pointer over the menu item opens a bubble with a short description of the product. When the Software is installed, a menu entry is added in the native menu selection of Solaris under Linux Applications.
  • VirtualBox is embedded in the operating system. You will have the option to install a Licensed copy of Microsoft Windows (XP) on it, then you will be able to run all Windows applications. If you choose not to install a Licensed copy of Microsoft Windows then you will only be able to run programs using only a fraction of all Windows API and only in 32bit mode. Should you download or install a Windows software, the Operating system recognise automatically the extension (.exe, .com, .msi etc) and loads the application in VirtualBox (full screen) as if you where running Windows. A menu entry is added in the native menu selection of Solaris under Windows Applications.
  • In other words, you will be able to run any Linux or Microsoft Windows program in Solaris, without having to leave the native desktop (no need for dual-boot, starting Virtual Box etc..), this is the next step of a Java integration of Bordeaux and VirtualBox.
  • What about Mac Software? Nothing much, depends on Mac willingness to sell their Operating System for non Mac Hardware. However the new Solaris UI is so innovative that this time Mac OS is the one that will have to do some catch up.
  • Another novelty is that a web browser (Firefox or Google Chrome) will an integral part of the OS. In other words, your desktop works as a web browser. This will enable seamless access to Web Cloud Applications (web based applications!), specially those using a JAVA/JAVA-Fx foundation.
  • By the way Linux people are working on a similar project!

COMP-SOS DOES NOT CONFIRM THESE STATEMENTS AND DECLINES ANY RESPONSABILITIES CONCERNING THE ABOVE ASSUMPTIONS. THESE ARE JUST RUMORS AND SHOULD BE SEEN AS SUCH. BUT MICROSOFT SHOULD REALLY BE SCARRED; IF ANY OF THE ABOVE SHOULD MATERIALIZE IN THE UPCOMMING SUN/IBM OS, MICROSOFT IS NOT GOING TO SURVIVE.
