Step by Step Installation of PCLinuxOS 2008 MiniMe on a Thumb Drive using VirtualBox Linux Guest and Windows Host (Host is the OS you are working with, in this example Windows XP/Vista. Guest is the OS that will be running inside VirtualBox).

You will need :

Download Sun xVM VirtualBox 1.6 (Windows x86 version or AMD64 if you are running Windows XP/Vista 64 bit) -> Install Sun xVM VirtualBox 1.6

Download PCLinuxOS-2008-Minime.iso from Softpedia

We recommend you use a fast USB Flashdrive of 1GB+, (You can get a iPalm 8GB USB 2.0 Mini Hard Drive for as little as $ 25.00 @ Geek.com). We like the 8GB because it has plenty of spare space for additional applications. We will show you how to customize the USB with your own choice of applications.

Next install Sun xVM VirtualBox, if not allready installed and start it

Select New -> Click [ Next - Button ]

Type Name of OS and Type as shown on the picture -> Click [ Next - Button ]

Setup the amount of memory you want to dedicate to VirtualBox (If you have 1GB -> 256 MB is fine) -> Click [ Next - Button ]

Click [ New - Button ] to create a new HD -> Click [ Next - Button ]
Choose -> Dynamically expanding image -> Click [ Next - Button ]
Select a size for the new HD (8GB is a good size if you intend to make more then one customized version of PCLinuxOS 2008 for your USB drives. (You will understan why if you go on reading). HD has been created and you are back to the main VirtualBox screen.
Select Settings -> CD/DVD-ROM, here we are going to select Mount CD/DVD Drive -> Iso image file (then click on the search folder icon on the right)
Select [ Add ] -> Browse to the location where you have downloaded ' pclinuxos-minime-2008.iso '. Check out the other settings and customize them to your liking.
Click [ OK - Button ] -> Click [ Start - Button ]
One more step -> Select USB -> Add your drive -> Click [ OK - Button ] -> Click [ Start - Button ]
VirtualBox starts -> If you get this message, then you have not configured your CD/DVD ROM right, just follow instructions. Make sure that the image file points to the location where you have downloaded the pclinuxos-minime-2008.iso.

PCLinuxOS Minime 2008 starts. LiveCD starts automatically

If for some reason the installtion freezes. go to -> Machine -> select [ Reset ] -> when installation starts -> select the 3rd option ' Safeboot ' as shown in the picture)

Select the keyboard layout of your choice -> Click [ Next - Button ]
Select -> user = ' root ' & password = ' root '
PCLinuxOS Minime 2008 starts

Click [ Install - Icon ] to install PCLinux on the virtual harddisk

Click [ Next - Button ] and follow instructions

Do not forget to dismount the CD/DVD ROM image before rebooting, to do so -> hit |right ctrl| key on your keybord to exit VBox Window -> go to [ Devices ] -> Unmout CD/DVD ROM. You can Mount CD/DVD ROM -> Host Drive (your drive letter) when the system restarts

Once intalled -> Start PCLinuxOS from the HD, Login as 'root' (you might be asked to create a user).

Always create a stong password for root and for user, you might loose your USB and you certainly do not want a 3rd party to view your files

Plug in the USB drive/disk -> the shown window should popup confirming VBox has recognized the USB Disk. Click [ Cancel ]

Next we want to open the Synaptic Package Manager and activate some extra repositories

Once in the Synaptic Package Manager -> Click [ Settings ] -> Click [ Repositories ] ->

Mark the following Repositories

  • < http://ftp. heanet.ie.....>
  • <http://gtlib.gatech.edu .....>
  • < http://ftp.leg.uct.ac.za.....>
  • <ftp://klid.dk.....>

when done Click [ OK ] -> Click [ Reload ]. We have to add some repositories, since all of them are not complete or do not offer all the apps we want.

You can always add more if needed. Remember to disable all of them if you want to use 'Make Remaster', this saves room!

For this example we have chosen to add OpenOffice.org, because it make sense to have office suite available on our USB. Search for OpenOffice.org and mark it for installation (Search and Install all the one you think you will need), Click [ Apply ] when done.

Now we are going to make our customized PCLinuxOS 2008 for the USB Drive. To do this -> Start -> System -> Make Remaster.

Follow instructions. When it asks for "would you like to provide some advanced options? ", select [ Yes ]. Leave first options as is

We do not want to install a guest account -> so we type "--nodir=^ /home/guest" -> [ OK ]
Next we type the name we want -> here we chose "myUSBversion.iso" and want to save it to the Desktop

It's making the customized iso file

Remaster is done. You can see it on the Dektop
This step is optional - Here we want to check if our USB drive is formated correctly. Start -> System -> Configuration -> Hardware -> HardDrake -> Hard Disk sda (left panel) -> Run Config Tool (bottom right panel)
Select the sda tab -> Select the partition -> Toggle to expert mode (bottom button), you should see something similar, important is that the type is FAT16, the others values might vary depending on the capacity of the USB drive. Make sure a volume label is assigned to the partition, in our case "minime", if not click on [ Label ] enter a name -> [ OK ]

Start -> System -> Make LiveUSB. Just follow the instructions

Go watch a movie! When it is done -> [ OK ] -> unplug the USB. Test it and enjoy!
